Good afternoon families! Hopefully these rainy days will bring us gorgeous May flowers! Here are this week’s updates!
Scoliosis Screenings for Grade 5 Students
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires that a screening of posture be performed on all children each year from Grade 5-9.
The purpose of the screening is to detect possible curvature of the spine in children. If the condition is detected early and appropriately treated, progressive spinal deformity may be prevented.
The procedure for screening is a simple one in which the school nurse looks at the student’s back, shoulders, and hips, as he/she stands upright and bends forward. To ensure a view of the spine, we will request the students expose their backs during screening. It is recommended that boys wear a shirt that can easily be removed. Girls are recommended to wear a bathing suit top, tank top, sports bra, or halter top under a shirt. Screening is planned for this Monday, May 1st, and if not completed on that day, will resume screenings on Thursday 5/4 & Friday 5/5. Please make sure to have your child come dressed as recommended above. Screening is done separately for each student.
You will be contacted if there is any reason to have your child examined by your healthcare provider.
If you do not want your child to be screened, please inform the school nurse in writing. A report of a completed postural/scoliosis screening from your healthcare provider is requested if opting out.
